Real Change comes from the inside out, it comes from tapping into the root, the very fabric of our thoughts! –Stephen Covey
What is Psychotherapy?
An opportunity to explore our thoughts, behaviors, feelings with a qualified mental health professional in order to achieve a more satisfying life, better relationships, an understanding of self and others, and enhance communication. An Integrated approach means we fit the needs of the client. It is NOT a one size fits all approach.
The techniques while varied all serve the same purpose to develop a positive client/therapist relationship, to assess difficulties and provide opportunities to change the way we think, feel, behave, perceive the world and relate to those around us.
Why Choose Therapy?
Clients choose to have psychotherapy for a variety of reasons ranging from experiencing difficulty with relationships, parenting, children or family dynamics, grief, life’s transitions, mental health difficulties, anxiety, depression, eating disorders, suicide, addictions or past trauma that is affecting daily life.
As an educator for many years I often see clients with educational and learning difficulties, self esteem, ADHD. I see a wide variety of Mental Health concerns and those wanting to develop coping & resiliency skills, mindfulness, and meditation practices. A psychotherapist can help you create a more harmonious life and satisfying relationships.
Psychotherapy offers a space where you can step outside of family/work/life dynamics and receive understanding from an impartial 3rd party. Part of healing is to be able to say what’s happening in your life without feeling judged, intimidated or defensive. It’s an opportunity to explore how the past or present is preventing you from living your best life!
A psychotherapist will help you re-discover your inner light and spark. We all need to feel whole and complete. Doubt, insecurities, fear, internal/external pressure or pain often cloud the way we see ourselves.
Sudden life challenges such as loss or illness force us to re-evaluate our life. When we are facing many challenges or our emotions are too much to handle or when life has become difficult and seems unmanageable, reaching out to a professional can help by providing you skills, strategies and tools to help you cope.
People often think that you have to have a crisis or be in crisis to receive counselling or psychotherapy. Receiving support when life is going well is often as important as receiving it when things aren’t going well. Everyone needs a support network, cheering section, someone to listen and a place for safe expression of thoughts, feelings and behavior.
For some people, Anxiety and Depression are constant. Sharing your thoughts, feelings, fears, concerns with a qualified mental health professional can help alleviate stress, help you to set goals and put a realistic, personal wellness plan into place.
Exploring issues, recognizing your strengths, putting together an individualized plan with goals, helps to boost your mood and mindset. A psychotherapist/counsellor holds you accountable while providing a neutral, non judgemental setting. Using a variety of tools such as guided meditation and challenging old mindsets will empower you to become the best version of yourself.
A psychotherapist can help to assess difficulties and provide opportunities to change the way we think, feel, behave, perceive the world and relate to those around us, therefore, improving communications skills, empathy and relationships.
Life challenges and losses can be overwhelming. Loss of employment, moving, a diagnosis of a life limiting illness or chronic condition, divorce, separation, death of a pet or death of a loved one, life's transitions – all take their toll on you. Everyone grieves differently and in their own time. Talking to a psychotherapist can help us process what is happening and at our own pace step back into life.
How Does it Work?
Sessions are client centered, and offer a place for “safe expression”. A 15 minute phone conversation to ask questions and get a sense if this is the right client/counsellor fit for you is optional. An Intake Session is an opportunity for the counsellor/client to engage in a question/answer discussion to find out your story, strengths, areas identified by you as concerns, needs, underlying factors and core issues.
Sessions are client centered and will delve into topics further with the opportunity to use a variety of modalities and techniques. A closing session provides an opportunity to reflect on your journey, your progress, accomplishments and honor you! In person sessions are available in Barrie, Ontario or Orillia, Ontario or online or by phone.
